If you are trying to build an email list or make more sales from your website then check this out! Do you want to make your website pop? No, not the terrible ones that take over your screen and show up straightaway. These can harm user experience. Poor user experience is bad for business and can deter users from visiting your site. You want your site to be easy for users to obtain certain information.

What is a website pop-up?

It can be a form to build your email list, a voucher or coupon code to entice someone to buy, a site wide notice about a special, or even a live chat.

Basically anything you want – and it will show up in a box that pops up over the rest of your content on your site. Typically popups include a call to action in an attempt to get your visitor to go do something you want them to. Website pop-ups can be incredibly effective if you use them correctly.

Here’s how to make your website pop-ups work best:

  1. Make sure that your pop-ups are timed. (This is the most important!) On a mobile device, leave at least 30 seconds when possible. This will allow someone to consume your content first before deciding if the message you show them is right for them. On a desktop or laptop you can set your pop up to be exit intent, so when someone is leaving the browser with their mouse the pop up displays.
  2. Display the right message at the right time. You can choose to display a different message on different pages. For example on your blog posts, or even certain blog topics or categories, you can display a special freebie to build your email list. And it can be specific to the topic someone is reading about. And on your shopping cart page you could display a special offer.
  3. Show different messages based on what someone did before. For example, if they signed up to your email list you can show them a special offer instead of a freebie, or lead magnet.
  4. Pop ups can also be for help. You can have a live chat box that pops up too. It can be a Messenger box or some other chat tool.

Social proof is one of the most powerful things you can use to sell things.

Why?

Because when we see others raving about something, we start to consider that it can work for us too.

Third party endorsements, or testimonials, are often the key to getting someone to say “yes” to what you sell.

Use this formula when asking for testimonials:

Just send the following questions to your clients as a prompt:

  1. What is the main reason you decided to purchase what I sell?
  2. What is your favourite thing about your purchase?
  3. How has your life (or business) changed specifically since you started using your purchase?
  4. Would you recommend this to someone else, and if so, what exactly would you say?

You can then edit their answers together into something that flows.

Sometimes I like to edit it and show it to them for final approval.

good testimonials

Here are a few more ideas to help your testimonials shine:

  • Pull out the best phrase the person says and use that as a headline at the top of your testimonial on your website. You can also use these phrases in ads or on graphics.
  • List the person’s name and job title if you are B2B or a person’s title “i.e. mum of 4” if you are B2C.
  • If you are selling something sensitive like weight loss or therapy or certain types of coaching you might only want to use the person’s initials or first name.
  • When you can add in a photo of the person. Most people are happy for you to just use their photo from a social media profile if you ask, especially LinkedIn.
  • If you can get a couple of video testimonials, these are amazing for social media posts.

Now, grab the questions I shared and email your clients to see if you can get a few testimonials to add to your website.

Or, even better, build this into your sales process.

Did you know that 84% of online searchers would rather land on a blog post or landing page than a website homepage? So you ask what is a landing page? The primary goal of a landing page is to convert visitors into leads.

Companies that create 30 or more landing pages get 7 times more leads than those that use fewer than 10. Simply put, landing pages increase conversions.

This is because the information on that page is the most relevant and least confusing if they get to that page from an ad, social media post, Google search, link in an email or any other means of direct traffic.

Here are the 3 main types of landing pages people can visit beyond your home page:

1. An opt-in page

This is a page designed to convert potential customers into subscribers with the help of a lead magnet. On this page,  people will fill in a form in exchange for something, whether it be a free resource, voucher or a request for an appointment or phone call.

What is a landing page for a website
What is a landing page for a website

2. A sales page

This is your core product or services page on your website that has one goal and that is to convince people to buy. People visit these pages to learn more about what you offer and decide if they want to take the next step to become a customer.

3. A blog post

These are informative articles and will generally offer a glimpse into your company's personality. They should have easy next steps someone can take with you, whether that is to get them on your email list or direct them to your product or services sales page.

What is a landing page for a website

Here are some important elements for your landing pages

What to put on an Opt-in Page:

  • Headline
  • What’s included in the item someone is requesting or what they can expect
  • Credibility like testimonials, awards won or, media appearances
  • An image that represents what someone is getting
  • Call to action: what is the next step someone should take, for example what do they need to fill out in the form?

What to put on a sales page:

  • Headline
  • Who you work with: your target market/perfect client
  • What are you selling and how is it different: your USP or unique framework and why it is great
  • Credibility - like testimonials, case studies, portfolio, awards won, media appearances, samples of your work
  • Who you are and what you are known for
  • Features: what’s included in your package or product
  • Call to action: what is the next step someone should take to do business with you from this page.

What to put on your blog page or posts?

You need to remember to provide loads of value and send someone to your opt-in page or sales pages for the next steps. Check this out if you need some help on how to write SEO friendly blog posts.

Ultimately, landing pages are used to drive visitors towards conversion by getting them to click through to a specific action. We can help you put together your ideal landing page on your WordPress website. Get in touch here!

In a crowded digital marketplace, it is becoming increasingly challenging to lure new customers to your business. We know ‘owning’ customer data is a key piece of the puzzle, but how do you get people to part with their contact details? Here are 10 of the best lead magnet ideas to help you grow your email list and supercharge your email marketing.

If you are struggling to build your email list from your WordPress website, then maybe it is because you are not giving away something valuable enough to make it worthwhile for people to join your list!

After building over 500 websites, these are the lead magnets, or freebies, I have seen work best.

Get the top 10 lead magnet ideas to grow your email list

You will see examples and recommendations for each.

What is a lead magnet?

Before we start, here’s a quick reminder of what a lead magnet is:

  • Something free that you give away to prospects in exchange for their contact details.
  • It should help your perfect prospect get a fast result.
  • It should easily lead people into doing something next with you to either become a customer, or at least get one step closer.

For a higher chance of conversion, your lead magnet needs to be irresistible. Keep in mind that your lead magnet should be something of high perceived value to your audience. Something that they would want or would find helpful. Lead magnets are a great way to promote your business, as well as give potential customers a taste of what they can get upon their further commitment with you.

What Is A Lead Magnet

The best lead magnet ideas:

Now, are you ready for my top 10? Here they are...

Infographic 10 Best Lead Magnet Ideas
Free trial lead gen example

Let's delve a little further into each type of lead magnet...

#1: A download

Your free download could be recipes, cheat sheets, checklists, or a list of tools with an offer to get your help to implement.

#2: Free trials

This can be a membership, subscription or software to allow someone to see if it is right for them before they purchase.

#3: Free samples

Let someone “try before they buy”. You could package your bestsellers and give a limited time incentive to buy a full version.

#4: A challenge

Create a series of lessons with one outcome that your prospect hopes to achieve. The challenges that have the highest rate of completion are 3-5 days where a group goes through it together. You can then sell them onto something else, whether products or services. The entire challenge can be run in a private Facebook Group, a series of emails, or both.

#5: A masterclass or webinar

You can teach something, do Q&A, share a case study or do a product demo, and then sell the attendee onto the next step, or get them to book a call with you. Educational or informative lead magnets, such as these, are especially effective for the 'business-to-business' or 'B2B' market, with a reported 51% of B2B buyers willing to share information about themselves or their company to register for webinars.

#6: A short e-course

Your short e-course might consist of sharing quick tutorials or lessons over a series of a few days to launch a new product, or try and remove overwhelm that comes from longer-form content. These videos could even be short demos of what you are trying to sell. If you’re looking at packaging and selling your expertise beyond sharing an online course for free, check out our tips for how to sell courses on your website.

#7: A free membership

Get prospects to create a free 'account' with access to limited content that expires after a certain amount of time. Or you can provide some free content within the complimentary membership, and then show sections that are 'gated' or locked, where a member needs to purchase to access more.

#8: A strategy or discovery call

This is essentially a sales call. You can address someone’s personal situation and how it applies to what you offer, then sell something at the end. Plus, a bonus tip is to position this as an audit or check, for example, a financial “health check”.

#9: A quiz or personal assessment

These can share results specific to how someone answered the questions, and then give them a next step to take with you. Quizzes are still some of the easiest ways to capture an email address and the least expensive lead magnets when advertising on social media.  Why?  We love to know more about ourselves, and quizzes are a great way to offer a self assessment - from business topics, to health, to wealth, to relationships.

#10: Discount or free voucher

This is perfect for ecommerce or even first time service buyers. Someone can sign up to get a voucher and redeem that towards their first purchase with you. Remember to add your call to actions (CTAs) in the right places to effectively increase conversions on your website.

Lead Magnet Example

And that’s it! Just make sure to follow up with your prospect with an email sequence once they sign up for your freebie, because the sale normally happens in the follow up phase. You certainly don't want to miss that opportunity. NOW is the time to build your email list – so get out there and create your ultimate lead magnet.

Finally, be sure to grab the free bonus download below (see what I did there 😉) with a list of these lead magnets and examples.

Email marketing is more powerful than it’s ever been. Sending emails to promote your products and services is an easy way to market your business to people who have signed up to learn more from you.

Many people say that email marketing is dead. In fact it is quite the opposite, with email offering the highest ROI or any marketing channel and giving you the ability to own your data, now’s the time to build an email list.

Are you building an email list from your WordPress website that you can use to market your business? If not, why not?

Why building an email list is so important:

Email marketing is stable:
You have more control connecting with your customers on email vs on social media.  Many of our clients come to us looking for help when their social media account or ad accounts are shut down.  Think about it! If you suddenly are unable to access your following on social media, then what do you do?

Acquiring customers is easier with email:
McKinsey’s report shows that email is still 40 times more effective at acquiring new customers than Facebook or Twitter. It’s getting harder to get engagement on social media for free to grow your business unless you have mastered being an influencer, using TikTok or being really active and consistent with posting on social media – and let’s face it, that can be hard.

Why building an email list is so important

It can be difficult to make sales from ads:
Ads are getting more expensive too. As Google ads, Youtube and social media ads become more mainstream their price goes up.  And consumers actually prefer emails to ads, with 70% stating that they want to learn about products and brands through email content instead of traditional advertising.

Other strategies can take longer:
Strategies like SEO can work well in attracting customers, but it takes time, can be expensive and has no guarantee that your website will show up on page 1 of Google for search results. Email marketing puts your offerings in your subscribers' inboxes fast!

Email marketing gives you more ROI than any other marketing channel:
Email marketing is the most effective advertising channel that generates $36 in ROI for every $1 spent. So if all the other stuff is getting harder now is the time to focus on growing your email list.

Why building an email list is so important

How to build an email list from your website:

Why building an email list is so important

To grow your list, you want to invite your customers to subscribe. A great way to do this is to create an opt-in. When someone opts-in to get messages from you, you essentially “own” their contact info.

To grow your email list, make sure that you have opt-in forms on your website in these places:

  • On your home page
  • Your about page
  • Your footer
  • On your blog posts
  • Consider using a pop up
  • A landing page you send traffic to

The best way to attract email sign ups in these areas is to give away something amazing, and of value for free – in marketing a popular term for this is a lead magnet.

Here are 10 of the best lead magnet ideas to help you grow your email list and supercharge your email marketing. Your lead magnet should be a sample of your product or services that showcase your expertise.

Why build an email list

Whether you want to increase your number of customers or build a stronger relationship with existing customers, email marketing is one of the easiest and least expensive ways to do so. Have a look at your website now and check to see if you are collecting emails.

Do you have a WordPress website?

If you do, you have plugins and themes that need to be updated or your site can crash, get hacked or be slow to load.

WordPress is amazing because it is so flexible on what it can do.

You can add a shopping cart, blog, e-courses, memberships, quizzes, landing pages, etc. Basically anything you need to grow your business, WordPress can handle with easy add-ons.

But the downside is that you have things that need to be kept up to date ongoing. Why...?

The importance of website maintenance:

WordPress uses a theme which is where your design sits, and plugins, which is the added functionality your site uses, like email opt-in forms or pop ups or the ability to accept payments.

If these are not updated then your site can crash or get really slow.

I have seen a lot of sites go down due to lack of maintenance or have major glitches, like people not being able to buy or fill out web forms without the owner knowing.

If you have not updated your site in a while or never have because you did not know you needed to, here are some important things to consider.

Wordpress Website Maintenance

WordPress Website Care Package

Here's why you might need a WordPress Care Package:

  • Updates come in small sizes or really big ones to themes, plugins and even WordPress itself. If there is a big update sometimes that can cause issues or plugin conflicts that need to be tested to make sure they are still working after you update.
  • It's important to run backups on your site in case something goes wrong so you don’t lose everything. These can be tricky to manage.
  • WordPress runs using a database and overtime this grows and grows and slows your site down. This should be looked at from time to time and cleaned. Without a fast site you get penalised by Google and won’t be listed high in the search results.

To keep your site running well and protecting your visitors' data, you need to maintain it.

And if this is all sounding too hard or overwhelming, we have a Website Care Package where we do everything for you.

A blog is an area on your website with educational articles. Your blog posts should have easy next steps someone can take with you, whether that is to get them on your email list or direct them to your product or services sales page. If you're reading this, guess what? You're on a blog.

Check this out! B2B marketers who use blogs receive 67% more leads than those who do not, and blogs have been rated the 5th most trusted source for accurate online information.

If you’re putting in the hard work to create ongoing blog posts on your website and don’t think anyone sees them, here are 3 easy steps you can start taking to increase blog traffic!

3 hacks to get more traffic to your blog

#1 - Make sure someone wants it before you create it

Keyword research is your best friend here, as it can assist with generating good blog post ideas and ensure that there is a sizeable target audience for your content. Google drives billions of searches a day so you want to use the right keywords to get in on that action.

Use a tool like Ubersuggest (it’s free). It will tell you what people are typing into Google and how many are searching for that phrase each month, so you know if there is enough interest.

If that tool seems a little complicated then check out answerthepublic.com (it’s also free).  You can find out the questions people are asking online.  To get ideas on where to start, start typing in a topic you want to talk about in Google or YouTube search.  See what the autofill suggestions are as you start typing.  The autofill phrases are popular search phrases and are a great place to start by inputting these phrases in the 2 tools we mentioned.

Once you’ve done your keyword research, you should ensure that your keywords are in all the right places in your blog posts. This means adding them to your post’s title, meta description, headers, image titles and alt text and body copy. Do you know how to use alt text? Here are some tips on how to write them.

How to increase blog traffic

#2 - Send traffic to your blog articles

Once you have written an article you know people want, it’s time to send traffic to it.

Here are 5 traffic tips to help:

  • Try Facebook ads.

By promoting educational content, and not selling anything, you can warm up an audience that you want to tap into and help establish credibility and build trust - all of which leads to building healthy relationships.

  • Create a “start here” page that links to your best posts.

Did you know that using the words “start here” can encourage new website visitors to take action instead of leave? You can link to this page from your menu and home page. Then link to your best posts and other valuable resources from this page. You can also link to blog posts from your FAQs.

  • Promote your blog posts in your email welcome sequence.

When someone signs up to your email list you want to send them an email nurture sequence. Mention your most popular posts in the initial emails to help get your subscribers invested in your blog.  We continue to get a lot of traffic to an article we mention in our own welcome sequence.

  • Set up a sharing contest.

You could even try creating a contest, where if someone shares your blogs on social media, you do a random draw each month. There is a cool tool to help called upviral.com.

  • Share your posts in your newsletter.

Promotion needs to be a big part of your content strategy, so don’t forget to send out your hard-earned blog posts in an ongoing newsletter. Write a short snippet of what the blog is about and include an image and link to your article.

Use a contest to get traffic to your blog
On-site SEO

#3 - Do onsite SEO

Try creating what is called a pillar post where you link to other smaller posts of yours that further explain a particular topic.  Think of a pillar post as a “table of contents” on a certain topic, or keyword phrase,  you are trying to be known for.  It includes subtopics broken into sections with a summary of each one.  Then each section links out to an article that dives deeper into that subtopic.  When done well these articles will continue to generate new visitors to your website frequently.

Also, remember that linking to your own articles is great for SEO, but it’s important to link outside sources too. This signals to Google that you’re not a spammer and helps build a positive relationship with the others blogs you’re linking to. Check out my Simple Guide to SEO here.

Next, you want to optimise your call to actions (CTA), or main steps you want someone to take in your articles. By making a keyword phrase the link instead of saying something like “click here”, you are motivating your visitors by providing descriptive labels and understandable directions.

Articles with images get 94% more total views than articles without images. By including images, you make your articles easier to read, and can also include keywords in the title of the photo. This creates opportunities to boost website traffic from Google image searches. Once you have your images, you need to rename the photos in your posts from 123.jpg, for example, to a keyword phrase people would use in Google.

There are some great WordPress plugins to help optimise your posts for Google. They make it easy to set up your URL slugs correctly, help you craft perfect meta descriptions, setup sitemaps, and aid you in navigating other SEO technical bits that may not come naturally to bloggers.  Two I recommend are Yoast SEO and WordPress SEO Plugin by Rank Math.

3 steps on how to get traffic to your blog

Overall, just be more strategic with your articles and don't create content for content’s sake. Steve Jobs said “Quality is more important than quantity. One home run is much better than two doubles”. And we completely agree! Check this out if you need help with how to write SEO friendly posts

The primary purpose of your website menu navigation is to allow website visitors to search for and find the information they are looking for with ease. What you put in your website navigation menu should be easy to understand and use, with links that go to the most important pages on your website.

94% of consumers say they want an easy to navigate website. You want to create a streamlined user experience. Is your WordPress website menu helping or overwhelming your visitors?

Here's what your website menu should have:

Link to your most important pages in your top menu

In order to capture your visitor's attention, your main navigation should be visible. Typically this should include; home, about, contact, services, products and a blog.

You can choose to remove the word “home” and just link the logo to the home page. Whether you do this or also have the word home, this allows users to always have access to their starting point.

In your footer menu or menu at the bottom of your site, you can show things like privacy policies. If your website has a lot of information, it might be helpful for people to use the footer to find other useful and important links you can’t fit into the main top website menu navigation.

Simplify the pages and paths you link to

In the context of user experience, simplicity is key. Combine topics or use further navigation paths, like junction boxes, or visual next steps, on your core pages. The primary goal of your menu navigation is to allow website visitors to search for and find the information they are looking for quickly and easily.

Think about what your customers need and move what they don’t to the footer menu. You can use Google Analytics to review your top visited pages or a heatmap tool like hotjar.com to see what people are clicking on.

Use submenus to help people get to specific topics faster

Try to limit your dropdown submenu to only go one level deep. Keeping it to a minimum will allow your website visitors to quickly find what they are looking for.

However, if you have a lot to share, like with an eCommerce site, try a mega menu. Mega menus are a great way to present a navigation system when you have a large amount of menu items. A mega menu is essentially a large dropdown menu that displays a collection of categorised links.

Highlight important support pages in a secondary top menu

Consider your demographic and current customers. What do they need to contact you? You can use a contact bar at the top of your menu that will allow your visitors to get in touch with you either by phone, email, and whatever other options you choose to include.

Do you have a member’s or customer’s area that requires a login? You can put this at the top where you can add things that won’t be used by all visitors and make it easy for your clients to find.

You might need a different mobile version of your menu 📲

  • In order to create a great user experience, make sure to test on a phone.
  • Best practice is using a hamburger menu. The hamburger icon is a universal symbol for a menu on mobile.
  • If you have customer logins or booking buttons, move them out of the menu so they sit above and can easily be clicked. No one wants to deal with the frustration of trying to navigate through a tiny menu or a menu with too many links.

Set up your menu to get leads

Lastly, remember your menu is your greatest tool to help guide new visitors to take the first, or next, step with you.

Here are a couple of quick tips to use your menu to get leads and build your email list.

It is crucial to make sure that your website is accessible and easy-to-use for all of your visitors. If you are unsure where to start, we are happy to review your menu and other areas that might stop visitors from being customers.

Do you want an easier way to build and update your WordPress website’s pages? We recommend adding on a page builder.

What is a WordPress Page Builder?

A page builder is an add-on that allows you to visually edit your pages by clicking and dragging content around, or easily adding or removing different items, like modules, rows, and templates.

First of all, some of you might be asking, why do I need a website page builder?

Well, out of the box WordPress is not the easiest platform for creating and editing pages.

And many of its themes, or design templates, are not easy to work with either, especially if they are over a few years old.

A page builder means you can build or edit your content visually without code.

They are amazing to have and make your life easy if you need to update your website yourself.

The problem with some is that they really slow down how fast your site loads, and your visitors and Google hates that.

This is because many of them have extra unneeded code, called 'code bloat'.
