If you are trying to build an email list or make more sales from your website then check this out! Do you want to make your website pop? No, not the terrible ones that take over your screen and show up straightaway. These can harm user experience. Poor user experience is bad for business and can deter users from visiting your site. You want your site to be easy for users to obtain certain information.

What is a website pop-up?

It can be a form to build your email list, a voucher or coupon code to entice someone to buy, a site wide notice about a special, or even a live chat.

Basically anything you want – and it will show up in a box that pops up over the rest of your content on your site. Typically popups include a call to action in an attempt to get your visitor to go do something you want them to. Website pop-ups can be incredibly effective if you use them correctly.

Here’s how to make your website pop-ups work best:

  1. Make sure that your pop-ups are timed. (This is the most important!) On a mobile device, leave at least 30 seconds when possible. This will allow someone to consume your content first before deciding if the message you show them is right for them. On a desktop or laptop you can set your pop up to be exit intent, so when someone is leaving the browser with their mouse the pop up displays.
  2. Display the right message at the right time. You can choose to display a different message on different pages. For example on your blog posts, or even certain blog topics or categories, you can display a special freebie to build your email list. And it can be specific to the topic someone is reading about. And on your shopping cart page you could display a special offer.
  3. Show different messages based on what someone did before. For example, if they signed up to your email list you can show them a special offer instead of a freebie, or lead magnet.
  4. Pop ups can also be for help. You can have a live chat box that pops up too. It can be a Messenger box or some other chat tool.

Social proof is one of the most powerful things you can use to sell things.

Why?

Because when we see others raving about something, we start to consider that it can work for us too.

Third party endorsements, or testimonials, are often the key to getting someone to say “yes” to what you sell.

Use this formula when asking for testimonials:

Just send the following questions to your clients as a prompt:

  1. What is the main reason you decided to purchase what I sell?
  2. What is your favourite thing about your purchase?
  3. How has your life (or business) changed specifically since you started using your purchase?
  4. Would you recommend this to someone else, and if so, what exactly would you say?

You can then edit their answers together into something that flows.

Sometimes I like to edit it and show it to them for final approval.

good testimonials

Here are a few more ideas to help your testimonials shine:

  • Pull out the best phrase the person says and use that as a headline at the top of your testimonial on your website. You can also use these phrases in ads or on graphics.
  • List the person’s name and job title if you are B2B or a person’s title “i.e. mum of 4” if you are B2C.
  • If you are selling something sensitive like weight loss or therapy or certain types of coaching you might only want to use the person’s initials or first name.
  • When you can add in a photo of the person. Most people are happy for you to just use their photo from a social media profile if you ask, especially LinkedIn.
  • If you can get a couple of video testimonials, these are amazing for social media posts.

Now, grab the questions I shared and email your clients to see if you can get a few testimonials to add to your website.

Or, even better, build this into your sales process.

In a crowded digital marketplace, it is becoming increasingly challenging to lure new customers to your business. We know ‘owning’ customer data is a key piece of the puzzle, but how do you get people to part with their contact details? Here are 10 of the best lead magnet ideas to help you grow your email list and supercharge your email marketing.

If you are struggling to build your email list from your WordPress website, then maybe it is because you are not giving away something valuable enough to make it worthwhile for people to join your list!

After building over 500 websites, these are the lead magnets, or freebies, I have seen work best.

You will see examples and recommendations for each.

What is a lead magnet?

Before we start, here’s a quick reminder of what a lead magnet is:

  • Something free that you give away to prospects in exchange for their contact details.
  • It should help your perfect prospect get a fast result.
  • It should easily lead people into doing something next with you to either become a customer, or at least get one step closer.

For a higher chance of conversion, your lead magnet needs to be irresistible. Keep in mind that your lead magnet should be something of high perceived value to your audience. Something that they would want or would find helpful. Lead magnets are a great way to promote your business, as well as give potential customers a taste of what they can get upon their further commitment with you.

What Is A Lead Magnet

The best lead magnet ideas:

Now, are you ready for my top 10? Here they are...

Let's delve a little further into each type of lead magnet...

#1: A download

Your free download could be recipes, cheat sheets, checklists, or a list of tools with an offer to get your help to implement.

#2: Free trials

This can be a membership, subscription or software to allow someone to see if it is right for them before they purchase.

#3: Free samples

Let someone “try before they buy”. You could package your bestsellers and give a limited time incentive to buy a full version.

#4: A challenge

Create a series of lessons with one outcome that your prospect hopes to achieve. The challenges that have the highest rate of completion are 3-5 days where a group goes through it together. You can then sell them onto something else, whether products or services. The entire challenge can be run in a private Facebook Group, a series of emails, or both.

#5: A masterclass or webinar

You can teach something, do Q&A, share a case study or do a product demo, and then sell the attendee onto the next step, or get them to book a call with you. Educational or informative lead magnets, such as these, are especially effective for the 'business-to-business' or 'B2B' market, with a reported 51% of B2B buyers willing to share information about themselves or their company to register for webinars.

#6: A short e-course

Your short e-course might consist of sharing quick tutorials or lessons over a series of a few days to launch a new product, or try and remove overwhelm that comes from longer-form content. These videos could even be short demos of what you are trying to sell. If you’re looking at packaging and selling your expertise beyond sharing an online course for free, check out our tips for how to sell courses on your website.

#7: A free membership

Get prospects to create a free 'account' with access to limited content that expires after a certain amount of time. Or you can provide some free content within the complimentary membership, and then show sections that are 'gated' or locked, where a member needs to purchase to access more.

#8: A strategy or discovery call

This is essentially a sales call. You can address someone’s personal situation and how it applies to what you offer, then sell something at the end. Plus, a bonus tip is to position this as an audit or check, for example, a financial “health check”.

#9: A quiz or personal assessment

These can share results specific to how someone answered the questions, and then give them a next step to take with you. Quizzes are still some of the easiest ways to capture an email address and the least expensive lead magnets when advertising on social media.  Why?  We love to know more about ourselves, and quizzes are a great way to offer a self assessment - from business topics, to health, to wealth, to relationships.

#10: Discount or free voucher

This is perfect for ecommerce or even first time service buyers. Someone can sign up to get a voucher and redeem that towards their first purchase with you. Remember to add your call to actions (CTAs) in the right places to effectively increase conversions on your website.

Lead Magnet Example

And that’s it! Just make sure to follow up with your prospect with an email sequence once they sign up for your freebie, because the sale normally happens in the follow up phase. You certainly don't want to miss that opportunity. NOW is the time to build your email list – so get out there and create your ultimate lead magnet.

Finally, be sure to grab the free bonus download below (see what I did there 😉) with a list of these lead magnets and examples.

Email marketing is more powerful than it’s ever been. Sending emails to promote your products and services is an easy way to market your business to people who have signed up to learn more from you.

Many people say that email marketing is dead. In fact it is quite the opposite, with email offering the highest ROI or any marketing channel and giving you the ability to own your data, now’s the time to build an email list.

Are you building an email list from your WordPress website that you can use to market your business? If not, why not?

Why building an email list is so important:

Email marketing is stable:
You have more control connecting with your customers on email vs on social media.  Many of our clients come to us looking for help when their social media account or ad accounts are shut down.  Think about it! If you suddenly are unable to access your following on social media, then what do you do?

Acquiring customers is easier with email:
McKinsey’s report shows that email is still 40 times more effective at acquiring new customers than Facebook or Twitter. It’s getting harder to get engagement on social media for free to grow your business unless you have mastered being an influencer, using TikTok or being really active and consistent with posting on social media – and let’s face it, that can be hard.

It can be difficult to make sales from ads:
Ads are getting more expensive too. As Google ads, Youtube and social media ads become more mainstream their price goes up.  And consumers actually prefer emails to ads, with 70% stating that they want to learn about products and brands through email content instead of traditional advertising.

Other strategies can take longer:
Strategies like SEO can work well in attracting customers, but it takes time, can be expensive and has no guarantee that your website will show up on page 1 of Google for search results. Email marketing puts your offerings in your subscribers' inboxes fast!

Email marketing gives you more ROI than any other marketing channel:
Email marketing is the most effective advertising channel that generates $36 in ROI for every $1 spent. So if all the other stuff is getting harder now is the time to focus on growing your email list.

Why building an email list is so important

How to build an email list from your website:

Why building an email list is so important

To grow your list, you want to invite your customers to subscribe. A great way to do this is to create an opt-in. When someone opts-in to get messages from you, you essentially “own” their contact info.

To grow your email list, make sure that you have opt-in forms on your website in these places:

  • On your home page
  • Your about page
  • Your footer
  • On your blog posts
  • Consider using a pop up
  • A landing page you send traffic to

The best way to attract email sign ups in these areas is to give away something amazing, and of value for free – in marketing a popular term for this is a lead magnet.

Here are 10 of the best lead magnet ideas to help you grow your email list and supercharge your email marketing. Your lead magnet should be a sample of your product or services that showcase your expertise.

Why build an email list

Whether you want to increase your number of customers or build a stronger relationship with existing customers, email marketing is one of the easiest and least expensive ways to do so. Have a look at your website now and check to see if you are collecting emails.

Need help adding in lead magnets and opt-in forms? Start with a website audit now.

Email marketing is a great way to stay in touch with your audience and keep them updated on new products and services. 64% of small businesses use email marketing to reach customers. And, did you know that email marketing returns the highest ROI of any marketing channel?

Are you trying to build your email list from your website but not having much luck?

There are many different strategies for building your email list, but across them all you need to provide enough value to people who visit your site so they are happy to give you their email address.

One of the best ways of doing this is by providing a 'lead magnet', or something of value that your ideal prospect wants, and also gives them a quick win.

What is a lead magnet?

A lead magnet is any piece of content that offers something of value to potential customers in exchange for an email address. People love free stuff, and it’s a chance for them to “try before they buy” from you.

And no - signing up for your newsletter is not going to cut it. Very few people want to add more clutter to their inbox right? They will part with their email only if you make it worth their while.

Here’s what you want your lead magnet to do:

  • Help your prospect get a fast result as it applies to their problem
  • Allow them to sample what you do - so make sure to give them some of your best stuff!
  • Be specific about who it is for and who it helps so you pre-qualify someone upfront
  • "Seed what you sell" so someone knows what they can do next with you
build your email list

Here’s list of our 10 best lead magnet ideas:

How To Build Your Email List

Where do you offer these freebies to grow your email list? You want to make sure your opt-in forms are everywhere on your website! Then link to them everywhere - across your website, on social media and in your ads.

Once you get that opt-in, they are now interested in what you have to say.  Make sure the very next step you send them to shares what else they can do with you.  If you want to learn more of what to do with someone once they opt-in for your lead magnet, check out What do you put in a thank you page?

Once you've decided on a lead magnet, you'll need to measure its success. This will help you determine whether or not it's worth continuing to make it available to your visitors. For example, if you're offering a free download, are people taking the next step with you once they get it?  How many downloads do you get each month? Versus if you offer a quiz or masterclass, are results better from those?

Lead magnets are powerful marketing tools that help organically grow your email lists. This is because they have the potential to convert prospects into loyal customers.

Do you need more client bookings? There’s nothing worse than the “back and forth” emails to try and lock something in.

The first step in getting more bookings on your site is to create an effective website landing page for each service you offer. This will give visitors a clear idea of what you do and how you can benefit them. Then on each landing page you should provide an easy automated way for people to book an appointment or call with you.

For businesses in the beauty and wellness industries you probably already have something in place like Shortcuts or MindBody Online. For restaurants you might have something like OpenTable, for example.

The tools I’m about to share are perfect for those of you who are consultants, in professional services or other service based businesses.

These booking tools for websites are perfect for the following appointments.

The two tools I use and love are Calendly and OnceHub. You can use both for free. Calendly and OnceHub are very similar and both offer similar functions.

You then block out times you are not available. When someone goes to book, only the times you are free are displayed, as pre-determined by you and any free spots you have not yet booked by others.

Calendly enables you to efficiently manage last-minute meetings and set buffer time between each event so you can control them better. To improve convenience, the program permits you to view if your team is available for the scheduled event. Whereas, OnceHub is a scheduling superpower designed to help you connect with prospects and customers through all stages of your funnel.

You can link them with your calendar if you use any of these:

  • Google
  • Office 365
  • Outlook
  • iCloud
